Case studies: England

We spoke to three teachers from schools across England to find out how they use Sumdog with their pupils and the impact they have seen.

Oasis Academy Limeside

"Sumdog does what it's supposed to do and alongside excellent teaching, is our main tool for helping pupils improve their maths fluency at Oasis Academy Limeside."

Neil Kelsall, Specialist Leader of Education, Oasis Community Learning, Oldham.

Tennyson Learning Community

"We've been using Sumdog since 2018 to support our levels of achievement."

Jo Quince, Director of Education at Tennyson Learning Community, Luton.

De Lacy Primary School

"We needed something specific to support spelling and grammar and Sumdog was the best solution for our learners."

James Parkinson, Headteacher at De Lacy Primary school, Pontefract Academies Trust, Pontefract.

St Saviour CE Primary School

"I’ve been an avid user of Sumdog since 2010 and have seen that regular use of the platform makes a huge difference in maths fluency."

Jonathan Moorhouse, Assessment Lead and Deputy Head at St Saviour CE Primary School in Bolton.

Lee Mount Primary School

"I also use Sumdog to support my teaching of the White Rose Maths curriculum, mental arithmetic practice and in preparation for the SATs."

Alexa Stephens, Year 6 teacher and Maths Lead at Lee Mount Primary School in Halifax.

Trinity St Peter's Primary School

"We love how we can let Sumdog’s adaptivity tailor questions to each child, so they can play alongside each other and work at their own level. "

Jonathan McCabe, Year 5 teacher and Assistant Headteacher at Trinity St Peter's CE Primary School in Liverpool.

Radipole Primary School

"Since implementing Sumdog, we have seen a significant improvement in children’s attitudes towards maths."

Philip Bowden, Year 5 teacher, Maths Lead and Phase Lead at Radipole Primary School in Weymouth.

Park Community Academy

"With such stark disparities across the class in terms of ability, Sumdog’s low-stakes approach helps to alleviate any stress or pressure around maths and makes it enjoyable for the pupils!"

Mairead Thompson, Special Educational Needs teacher and Head of Secondary Maths at Park Community Academy in Blackpool.

"We are also seeing students
with autism, and for those where focusing is a
challenge, really benefit from 20-minutes of lowintensity
maths practice that offers little rewards and
achievements throughout."

Brian Elsegood is Director of Maths at West SILC in Leeds.
