This year is the 10th anniversary of Maths Week Scotland, and we are marking it the way we always have: free resources for every Scottish classroom, a national contest that every class can enter — whether you already use Sumdog or start a free trial — and our team out on the road visiting the winners.

The Sumdog national maths contest


Our contest has run every year of Maths Week Scotland since the very first one in 2017. Pupils answer maths questions while they play. Scores are based on accuracy rather than speed, and questions adapt to each child, so any class in Scotland can win, whatever level they are working at.

Free to enter

Every Scottish class can take part, whether or not your school already subscribes. No marketing and no sales pitch for those using a free trial to compete.

Prizes for the top three

A trophy and Sumdog goodies for the winning class, plus runner-up prizes, and a visit or an assembly video from Sumdog himself.

A contest win means more when someone turns up at assembly to say so. Our team has been out across Scotland doing exactly that.

East Renfrewshire

128 classes across the authority answered more than 180,000 maths questions during our November contest. Priya and Cameron from the Sumdog team presented prizes to the winning and second-place classes in front of their year groups.

Two days, four towns, trophies and certificates at assembly. At Woodside Primary, we also ran a “See it, you can be it” session on careers in technology, education and games, and what maths has to do with all three.

We were founded in Edinburgh, and we are still here, at CodeBase on Lady Lawson Street. Scottish schools were our first schools, and Maths Week Scotland has been in our calendar every year since it began. When we say we know Scottish classrooms, we mean the ones down the road from the office.
