Sumdog's complete Year 1-6 maths content will soon be available in Welsh, providing curriculum-aligned, adaptive practice that supports Welsh-medium education and makes maths accessible for every learner in Wales.

We're excited to share that Sumdog's complete Year 1-6 maths content is being translated into Welsh, ready for the start of the new school year in September. This significant development reflects our commitment to supporting Welsh-medium education and ensuring that every pupil in Wales can access engaging, adaptive maths practice in their language of learning. This is particularly important as schools continue to embed the Curriculum for Wales and seek resources that genuinely support its principles with resources that are flexible, personalised, and accessible to all learners.

Over the past year, we've had the privilege of attending events across Wales and speaking with educators in Welsh-medium and bilingual settings. Time and again, we've heard how impactful translated content would be for pupils learning through the medium of Welsh. Teachers and school leaders have shared that whilst curriculum alignment is essential, true accessibility means pupils can practise maths confidently in the language they think and learn in.

There's more to content translation than just the language. It's about creating an inclusive learning environment where every child feels at home. For Welsh-medium schools, having high-quality, curriculum-aligned digital resources in Welsh removes barriers and supports pupils' fluency in both maths and their first language. It also demonstrates a respect for linguistic identity that matters deeply to families and communities across Wales.

Bringing Curriculum for Wales Alignment to Welsh-Medium Maths Practice

Last year, we aligned Sumdog's maths content to the Curriculum for Wales, ensuring that pupils practise skills and concepts that reflect the progression steps and statements of what matters within the Mathematics and Numeracy Area of Learning and Experience. This alignment was developed in collaboration with Welsh educators and designed to support the curriculum's emphasis on learner progression, inclusivity, and real-world application of mathematical thinking. 

Our Welsh translation builds directly on this foundation. It means that schools using Sumdog can now offer pupils curriculum-aligned practice that is not only adaptive and engaging but also delivered entirely in Welsh. 

By combining curriculum alignment with Welsh-language content, we're helping to ensure that digital tools support rather than hinder the pedagogical vision at the heart of education in Wales. Pupils can engage with maths in a way that feels relevant, supportive, and linguistically authentic.

How Sumdog's Welsh Translation Supports Mixed-Ability and Mixed-Age Classes

One of the realities of primary education in Wales, especially in smaller or rural schools, is the prevalence of mixed-ability and mixed-age classes. By translating our entire Year 1-6 maths content into Welsh, we're aiming to remove that burden. Teachers can assign ready-to-use, curriculum-aligned practice with confidence, knowing that pupils will be supported in their language of learning. There's no need for translation, adaptation, or additional preparation, just meaningful maths practice that fits seamlessly into the school day and supports learning at home.
